Most care homes share the same rating: 62% of rated homes are Good in every key question. So we don't invent a score to split them. We group homes into tiers using CQC's own ratings, and you can then sort and filter within an area by the things that matter to you. How tiers work →
Why the date of a rating matters
Half of all care home ratings in England were published more than 4.3 years ago. CQC re-inspects according to risk, so a home with an old rating has often simply not been a priority. That isn't a criticism of the home, but it does mean the rating may not describe it today. We show the age of every rating and flag those over 5 years old. We never rank a home lower because of it.

The rating tiers
- Outstanding: Rated Outstanding overall.
- Good, with Outstanding areas: Good overall and Outstanding in at least one key question.
- Good: Good overall and in every key question.
- Good, with an area to improve: Good overall but Requires improvement or Inadequate in at least one key question.
- Requires improvement: Rated Requires improvement overall.
- Inadequate: Rated Inadequate overall.
- Not yet rated: Newly registered, or CQC has not yet published a rating.
